The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the National
University of Singapore Undergraduate Research exchange began in
2003. Currently, up to three students from each university can participate
annually.
Caltech will nominate up to three students—two in engineering
and one in science—to participate in the Caltech-NUS exchange.
Preference will be given to those who are not Singaporean students
or students of Singaporean descent seeking to spend the summer at
home.
Students will complete an application and write a detailed personal
statement stating their research interests. They may browse the NUS
web sites (http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg and http://www.science.nus.edu.sg)
to identify the areas of research activities in the Faculty of Engineering
and Faculty of Science to discover the work carried out at NUS.
After selection, the Faculty of Engineering and
Faculty of Science at NUS will match Caltech students with mentors
whose research best matches the students’ interests.
Caltech students will collaborate with the mentor to
define and develop the project. The student must write a project
plan which is due May 15, 2009, or prior to beginning the project,
if earlier. See project plan guidelines at www.murf.caltech.edu/fellows/guidelines.html
Students will conduct their projects for ten weeks beginning in
mid-June/early July.
At the conclusion of the summer, students will submit a written
technical report to their mentor before leaving for home. Students
will also need to follow additional final report procedures as communicated
by the SFP office.
NUS will pay an award of approximately $6,000 Singaporean Dollars
to Caltech students for the ten-week period.
Caltech students may live in dormitories on the NUS campus. The
cost of housing is about $500/month (exact charges will be determined
by April of each year). Please note housing is extremely difficult
to come by and students are encouraged to apply early for housing.
Students will provide their own meals and transportation costs.
Caltech students must comply with health and accident insurance
requirements of NUS.
Caltech students will need to ensure that they have appropriate
travel documents for entering Singapore.
Note: Students interested in conducting summer research at Caltech
should apply through the Exchange program process and NOT apply independently
through the SURF application process.
NUS Deans and faculty will nominate promising
students who have completed their third year. For more
information contact: Ms. Peck Gee Chua, Assistant Manager (Americas),
International Relations Office, NUS, 65-6516-6172 (DID), irocpg@nus.edu.sg (E), www.nus.edu.sg/iro
The nominated students will submit an application
that includes a detailed personal statement. The personal statement
should include specific information about the student’s research
interests. Students are encouraged to review Caltech faculty websites
to discover the work carried out at the Institute (http://www.caltech.edu,
click on Academic Divisions from the home page). Students should
incorporate their personal research interests with the research carried
out at Caltech in their personal statements.
After selection, the Caltech Student-Factuly
Programs office will identify mentors whose research best matches
the students’ stated
interests. Please note that not all nominated students will be selected
and matched with a mentor.
NUS students will collaborate with the mentor to define
and develop the project. The student must write a project plan which
is due May 15, 2009, or prior to beginning the project, if earlier.
See project plan guidelines at www.murf.caltech.edu/fellows/guidelines.html
Students will conduct their projects during ten weeks
in the summer. The SURF program formally begins Tuesday, June 16,
2009. To accommodate differing academic schedules between Caltech
and NUS, students may begin work at other times, but not earlier
than May 15 (with agreement of the mentor). Students must complete
their projects before the fourth Friday in September.
At the conclusion of the summer, students will give an oral presentation
at Summer Seminar Day at Caltech. Students will also submit a written
technical report due on the fourth Friday in September.
Caltech will pay each selected NUS student US$6000 for the ten-week
period in two installments.
Students may live in campus housing. Students will pay housing costs
of approximately $800 per month (exact charges will be determined
in April 2009).
Students will provide their own meals and pay travel costs.
NUS students will be required to show proof of health insurance
valid in the United States for the duration of the program.
NUS students are required to obtain a US visa
after acceptance into the program. Caltech’s International
Student Programs (ISP) Office will assist with this process.
