2009 William Whitney Professional Development Workshops

The purpose of these workshops is to help students make short-term career decisions in the context of long-term life and career goals. These sessions will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Avery Dining Room (#99). A light supper will be served for the first 80 attendees.

June 22: Inventing Your Future: What Are Your Options?
Progress in moving toward an interesting and satisfying career has more to do with actively inventing and systematically exploring future possibilities than with passively waiting until inspiration for the perfect choice strikes like a bolt from the blue. The engineering of a space mission requires knowledge of the scientific objectives, and systematic consideration of the options for carrying out each step given the capabilities and limitations of current technology and constraints in schedule and in funding.  Our speakers will describe how you can use the same approach in planning possible career paths for yourself.

June 29: Understanding Your Leadership and Work Style
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator reports your personality “preferences” on four scales. The four scales deal with where you like to focus your attention, the way you like to look at things, the way you like to go about deciding things, and how you deal with the outer world. Learning about your MBTI can help you better understand your own work style, how others in a team setting might approach work, and your own approach to leadership. Join us for this fun and interesting workshop!

July 6: Networking: How to Make It Work for You
In this workshop, participants will learn how to put networking to work for them and how it can impact their academic and future professional success. Plenty of Caltech alumni, faculty, and friends will be on hand to
practice these new skills!

July 13: Graduate School: The Nuts and Bolts of the Application Process
Thinking of applying to graduate school? This session will provide useful information as you consider this next step in your academic career, write your personal statement, apply for fellowships, and select the institution you will attend.
