and JPL Seminar Days will be August 15 and 16. More information to follow...
Mail and Library Books
A reminder to all non-caltech students; be sure
to change your forwarding address at the Caltech post office so that mail
will no longer be sent to the SFP Office after you have gone. Also, please
be sure to return all library books before you leave for the summer.
Second Progress Report & Abstract
(Note: The following instructions are for non-JPL students
only. JPL students have already been sent specific instructions regarding
what is required of them.)
All SFP students were required to submit three items on August 1:
1. Second Progress Report, in hard copy and signed by your
mentor.
Guidelines can be found on your program's web site:
SURF, MURF, LIGO, USRP, Space
Grant, PGGURP
Other programs: Please use the SURF link.
2. Abstract, in MSWord (preferred) or .txt format, sent as
an attachment to sfp@caltech.edu.
Guidelines can be found on your program's web site (see above). Please
be especially careful about proofreading and formatting because we will
publish your abstract as you submit it.
3. Abstract, in hard copy and signed by your mentor.

Noon Seminars - 22 Gates (Food
will be provided) Harry Atwater, Howard Hughes Professor and
Professor of Applied Physics and Material Science
Plasmonics: Bending and Switching
Light at the Nanoscale
The rapidly developing field of plasmonics has captured the
imagination of physicists, chemists and engineers because of the unique
ability to control optical dispersion and localize light in metallodielectric
materials at nanoscale dimensions. Many ideas are currently being
generated by researchers, which may ultimately enable plasmonic components
to form new metamaterials designs and also building blocks of a chip-based
optical device technology with potential imaging, spectroscopy and interconnection
applications in ultramicroscopy, computing, communication and chemical/biological
detection.
In this talk I will describe recent opportunities presented by new plasmonic
structures including i) negative refraction of light in the visible and
near infrared ii) plasmon-enhanced emission from quantum dots, and iv)
active plasmonic devices based on electro-optic and all-optical modulation
of plasmon propagation. I will discuss the application of plasmonic
materials to superlenses capable of imaging below the diffraction limit
and invisibility cloaks that operate at visible frequencies.
SURFSAC Supper

Noon Seminars - von Karman Auditorium (11:30AM - 12:30AM)
Richard J.
Terrile, Director of the Center for Evolutionary
Computation, Mission Formulation
Rise of the Machines: Exploring Space with Intelligent Robots
This talk will examine the field of evolving intelligent machines to
explore space and directly address how close we are to creating true
artificial intelligence. Evolutionary computation is changing the way
humans interact with computers and may bring us to the threshold of
conscious machines. Today's advances in science and technology
will be contrasted with predictions based in science fiction and movies.

Dance Events
Beginner Argentine Tango: Introduction to Milonga ________________________________________________________________________
Instructor: With professional instructor Vladimir Estrin.
When: 8 Sundays, starting July 22 to September 16, 8:00-9:30 pm.
NOTE: No class on August 26 due to a workshop.
Where: In Dabney Hall
Cost: FREE for Caltech Undergrad & Grad students (with ID); $5/class
or $35/series for Caltech affiliates & other university students* (with
ID); $8/class or $56/series regular.
*Discounts apply for full-time students from any college/university/institution.
Please bring a current student ID.
** Series price paid in whole on the first day of class.
About: Milonga, along with vals and tango, make up the triad
of music and
dance forms of Argentine Tango. Set to a lively 2/4 tempo music, milonga
uses the same basic elements as tango, though the movement is more accented
and upbeat. It is rather a kind of rhythmic walking without the complicated
figures of tango.
Notes: NO dance experience or partner necessary. Tango is
danced in close position with figures that require a lot of pivoting on
the balls of your feet. As such, it is ideal for beginners to wear close-toed
shoes with smooth bottoms -- suede or leather is ideal, hard rubber is
ok. Most ladies wear heels -- if you do so, make sure to choose a pair
with straps so that the heel is NOT loose, this will aid in your pivots.
