Student Mail Boxes
To allow the non-Caltech students more time to access their
mail after hours, we have arranged to have the north entrance to Parsons-Gates
(down the stairs) remain unlocked until 8:00 pm. At 5:00 pm we will put
the mail boxes and packages in the vestibule just inside the north door.
This arrangement will begin today. Mail can still be collected in our office

SURFSAC - Cooking Competition With Prizes and Potluck Dinner
When: 8:30 pm on the Olive Walk; judging starts at 8:40 pm
Details: Cook your favorite dish and bring it to be judged
at a cooking competition. We will have three gift certificate prizes valued
at $20 each: best entree, best dessert, and most creative/original dish
(based on taste combination and presentation). Afterwards, there will be
a potluck where everyone who participated in the competition can try the
other items brought.
The rules of the cooking competition are as follows:
(1) To share in the potluck after the competition, you must
bring an entree (5 servings), dessert (12 servings), or other item (5 -
12 servings). All competitors are automatically invited to the potluck
following the competition. Others are welcome to be spectators at the event.
(2) There are three categories and you may make as many entries
for each category as you want. You may also enter items as a group, but
your group will have to determine how to split your prize if you win.
(3) No one item can win more than one prize, but if a given
person/group does make multiple excellent entries, you may win in more
than one category.
(4) There is no time limit for how long you spend making
your item or restriction on ingredients (except that you cannot use alcohol,
unless you are cooking out the alcoholic part of it). Just bring your entry
between 8:30 - 8:40 pm on Tuesday if you want to be considered in the competition.
Please have your name, a name for your dish, and your recipe written on
a card/piece of paper (names on the front and recipe on the back) for each
entry. We are going to make a recipe book available after the event.
Other info: There will be three judges, who are SURFSAC students,
and they will each only need a couple bites of whatever it is that you
make.

Recent Advances in the Science and Technology of Superconductivity
Superconductivity, a phenomenon associated with certain materials that conduct
electricity with no resistance below a critical temperature, has been a fascinating
topic that continuously stimulates new scientific and technological advances.
The discovery of high-temperature superconductors over 20 years ago has further
spurred a worldwide frenzy in superconductivity research. A vast amount of new
physics knowledge beyond conventional superconductivity has since been developed,
and a variety of applications ranging from magnetic sensors for cardiograms to
microwave filters for cellular phone base stations have been realized. This talk
will review basic concepts and applications of conventional superconductivity
and further describe important physics issues and challenges of high-temperature
superconductivity. In addition, some of the most exciting recent developments
in the research and technological applications of superconductivity will be discussed.

Living on a Restless Planet: Using Space Technology to Study
Earthquakes
Earthquakes cause billions of dollars in damage and great loss of life. Space
technology in the form of GPS and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture
Radar (InSAR) data coupled with computer models are improving our understanding
of earthquake processes. Under NASA's QuakeSim Project scientists
are modeling earthquake fault systems using the latest data and high-performance
computers. The goal is to improve earthquake forecasts and mitigate damage
from this natural hazard.

necessary, so come out! There will be players from Caltech's water polo team,

This is isn't highly competitive, so if you are looking for some water polo
for the summer, this is a good way to come out, play some of the game, and
meet some people around Caltech who will play with you!
