This is the last WAVE of the summer. It has been a pleasure
meeting all of you. We hope everyone of you had an enjoyable and educational
summer. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors!
Here's where SFP students and others can announce events
or opportunities. These entries should be succinct and must include a contact
name and e-mail address. Entries must be received by 8AM Friday morning
prior to the weekly WAVE posting.

Dr. Paul Patterson - Student Research Opportunities
Mentors: Ali Khoshnan & Paul Patterson, Biology
Division
Highly motivated students are needed for research on the
role of IKKg in amyloidogenesis. IKKg is a regulatory component of
the Ik-B kinase complex and modulates the NF-kB signaling pathway. Previous
work in this laboratory has shown that IKKg binds to mutant huntingtin
protein (Htt, which causes Huntington's disease, HD) and promotes its oligomerization
and toxicity (Khoshnan et al., 2004). Our recent data show that IKKg
also interacts with amyloid-precursor protein (APP, which when mutated
causes Alzheimer's disease, AD). We hypothesize that IKKg regulates
proteolysis of APP and production of the amyloidogenic peptide Ab, which
is the active factor in AD. Students will undertake biochemical
and molecular analyses of IKKg/APP interaction and examine how this interaction
regulates production of Ab oligomers and neurodegeneration.
Another project involves exploring the neuroprotective function
of pleiotrophin (PTN) in HD. PTN is a neurite outgrowth promoting factor
that is expressed in the brain and its levels are elevated by injury. Our
work shows that PTN levels are also induced by mutant Htt. Moreover, exogenous
PTN reduces the aggregation and toxicity of mutant Htt. Students will investigate
the mechanism of PTN-induced neuroprotection in HD cellular and animal
models.

Dance Events
Beginner Argentine Tango: Introduction to Milonga ________________________________________________________________________
Instructor: With professional instructor Vladimir Estrin.

NOTE: No class on August 26 due to a workshop.
Where: In Dabney Hall

or $35/series for Caltech affiliates & other university students* (with
ID); $8/class or $56/series regular.
*Discounts apply for full-time students from any college/university/institution.
Please bring a current student ID.
** Series price paid in whole on the first day of class.
About: Milonga, along with vals and tango, make up the triad
of music and
dance forms of Argentine Tango. Set to a lively 2/4 tempo music, milonga
uses the same basic elements as tango, though the movement is more accented
and upbeat. It is rather a kind of rhythmic walking without the complicated
figures of tango.
Notes: NO dance experience or partner necessary. Tango is
danced in close position with figures that require a lot of pivoting on
the balls of your feet. As such, it is ideal for beginners to wear close-toed
shoes with smooth bottoms -- suede or leather is ideal, hard rubber is
ok. Most ladies wear heels -- if you do so, make sure to choose a pair
with straps so that the heel is NOT loose, this will aid in your pivots.
