Partnership Statement

The Student-Faculty Programs Office (SFP) coordinates an array of programs to provide outstanding undergraduate research opportunities to students while also providing them with complementary support activities to enhance their summer experiences.

SFP directly coordinates the following programs:

  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)
  • MURF Undergraduate Research Fellowships (MURF)
  • Axline Scholars
  • HHMI Abroad
  • HHMI EXROP
  • Caltech-NUS Exchange
  • Caltech-HKU Exchange
  • Caltech-IIT Kanpur Exchange

SFPO also partners with the following allied programs to provide administrative support to the program managers and to bring the students in these programs into a unified community of scholars.

  • Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)
  • Caltech-Cambridge Exchange (CamSURF)
  • NASA Space Grant
  • NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP)
  • NASA Planetary Geology and Geophysics Research Program (PGGURP)

Students in all programs are afforded the same opportunities and have the same responsibilities.

  • Students submit either a research proposal or a project plan written in collaboration with the mentor
  • Programs are of 10-week duration
  • Students receive $500/week for the ten-week program
  • At the conclusion of the programs, students give oral presentations and submit technical papers
  • Students may attend seminars, workshops, and social activities coordinated by SFP
  • Students may live in campus housing

SFP provides the following administrative functions:

  • Processing of applications and reviews for programs directly coordinated by SFP
  • Processing fellowship payments for students receiving funds through Caltech
  • Receipt and processing of progress reports, abstracts, and final reports
  • Coordination of oral presentations during several day or half-day symposia
  • Summer programming including arrangement of research seminars on campus and at JPL, Whitney Workshops on professional development, field trips, and social events
  • Coordination with campus organizations, including Security, Safety, Housing, Alumni Association, and Human Resources
